Storyline:
"The Way" is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn't plan on is the profound impact the journey will have on him and his "California Bubble Life". Inexperienced as a trekker, Tom soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey. On his journey, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, each with their own issues and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen), a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt), who is suffering from a bout of writer's block. From the unexpected and, often times, amusing experiences along the way, this unlikely quartet of misfits creates an everlasting bond and Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again. Through Tom's unresolved relationship with his son, he discovers the difference between "the life we live and the life we choose".

The Way was quite an intriguing movie. It should strike a chord with those who may have lost a loved one whether a parent, sibling or a child, as is the case in "The Way." The characters who join Martin Sheen on his pilgrimage trek across Spain provide a curious and fun support group. This could have been a most serious and heavy message movie but it delivers a wonderful message in a most positive and enjoyable fashion.

For a chronicle of human emotions and bonding, please just go see this. And, if you've ever been to Spain, don't miss it. If not, GO to Spain and see the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela. There is so much life in this movie, it's a great journey, like the actual way.

A movie that will generate different thoughts for everyone. For me I left the movie doubting the path I'm on and saying there's more to life than working my *** off. I've got to spend more time smelling the roses ... spending time with friends and family. this is a must see for all ages, not just the 'BOOMERS" as they hit midlife.!

First of all, seeing a father/son duo like this is rare and worth the effort to go. It is fun and enjoyable to see Martin Sheen in this down to earth story. Estevez keeps it flowing and without visually beautiful like we are onthe trek with them. Estevez also put in all the elements to really knock our socks off emotionally. The loss of a child and the need to heal spritually in some way. However, the big gut punch is mild at best and I wanted more. Deborah Unger's big scenes were powerful and worked as she confessed her "sins". Yorick Van Wageningen's portayal of the fun loving Danish trekker worked especially well when his "sins" spilled out. A fun once in a blue moon movie that is worth full price.

We thoroughly enjoyed the movie because it took us on a trip we would be unlikely to experience on our own. Martin Sheen did a great job as did the other characters.
